Bush throws public a bone

Doing his best not to crack a smile, President Bush said at a news conference on Tuesday that, "To the extent the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility."

In the back of the room at the White House, Michael Moore could be heard exclaiming, "AHA! See? See? I knew it!" The comments were met with both shushes and sighs.

Meanwhile, it become increasingly clear that Bush's statement held little meaning or consequence, as the president eased into some of his more typical paper-thin lines: "I'm not going to defend the process going in," Bush said. "I am going to defend the people saving lives. ... I want people in America to understand how hard people worked to save lives down there," he said.

Towards the side of the room, Ed McMahon could be heard exclaiming, "How hard did they work?!"
